Halsewell 1781

Wed 3 Jan

15º15’ N

Hove too and sounded, expecting to get ground on the Macclesfield but got none at 70 fathoms by which we must be to the eastward of it. This agrees with Wm Dalrymple’s chart but having twice struck the bank coming from China with 1..35 merid distance from Ladrone I was very much disappointed in not getting ground this day and believe had we hove to more to the N’ward we had struck ground.

Halsewell 1781

Thurs 4 Jan

Sounded every hour from 30 to 35 fathoms up and down but got no ground.

Halsewell 1781

Continues to sound without result.

Halsewell 1781

Sun 7 Jan

Sent out long boat with 3rd Officer and 8 men to take soundings to give to the Commodore.

Halsewell 1781

Mon 8 Jan

Many grappus’s about the ship. I find an amazing current these 24 hours being 4º8 the S’ward of account.

Halsewell 1781

Tues 9 Jan

5º23'N

(Carinata Passage) I kept the longboat ahead all night sounding and keeping a good lookout. Commodore made signal to all Commanders which was answered. At 7 am she made signal of having got soundings of deep water. Hove too, sounded ground 50 fathoms sand with black specks. Our longboat has been out 2 days ahead of the Commodore, provided with signals, lights & necessaries.

Halsewell 1781

Wed 10 Jan

5º23'N

At 3 pm our longboat made signal for seeing the land – which we soon after saw – being the N’ern Natuna about 8 leagues. At midnight our longboat made signal for seeing land which I at first supposed to be E’rn Natuna but we found it to be the Steeple Island. In the morning we had some very smart long squalls which obliged us to reef & growing very thick the Commodore hove too. At 1/2 past 7 it clear’d. The Halsewells and Sandwich longboats ahead of the Commodore. Course by log corrected to ye land, agreeable to Mr Dalrymples chart.

Halsewell 1781

Thurs 11 Jan

1º35 N

Commodore under an easy sail with Halsewell & sandwich longboats ahead. I expected from our course to have seen, agreeable to Mr Herberts chart, the Island Platte (?) but saw no land until midnight when an island making as may be seen in my sketches bore as Lo????? A small Round island. These I take to be the Islands De Remarque and St Pierre laid down by Mr Dalrymple as seen by the Elephant and Camel.

Halsewell 1781

Fri 12 Jan

0º29 S

Saw island which I take to be E’most of the 2 islands laid down by Mr Dalrymple in his chart – I call this Deanes Island.

Halsewell 1781

Sat 13 Jan

1º23 S

Squalls. The Oxford hoisted in her cutter. 2 longboats ahead all night. Sounding very irregular. Frequently falls from 16 to 19 to 25. Saw Island Saratou.

Halsewell 1781

Sun 14 Jan

AM the longboat made signal to come on board which was answer’d. The Sandwich longboat being ahead, gave them a fresh supply of candles, lanthorns & necessary refreshments and sent her ahead again. I take a fresh departure yesteray at noon from W end of Saratou allowing it to lie in Lat 1º34 S. It is impossible to ascertain the set of the current at present. I shall therefore postpone it till we make Lubeck, Java & Madeira and then endeavour to account for it.

Halsewell 1781

Mon 15 Jan

Departed this life Nicholson, a Dane and at 4 am William Smith a quarter master of a fever. At noon committed their bodys to the Deep.

Halsewell 1781

Tues 16 Jan

These 24 hours fresh gales and v hard squalls in the night. One in particular split our Main Topsail and in which I imagine the Commodore bore up and ran much to E’ward. She made signal to bring too in the night which we did not hear and not seeing his light kept under an easy sail on the same course as she before steer’d. In the morning the longboats were out if sight, immediately hove too as did Britannia & Sandwich. Soon after saw them in NW. I was under much anxiety for the boats as it blew very hard in the night with a large sea.

Halsewell 1781

Wed 17 Jan

Streights of Bally

Fresh gales & squalls. The Sandwich parted her cable and drove far over towards Gillion. We since learn she lost 2 Bower anchors.

Halsewell 1781

Thurs 18 Jan

Streights of Bally. Very hard squalls. Commodore made signal to close in his wake. I bore down accordingly seeing it impossible for other ships to get into Samanap. I saw plainly the islands called in Mr Dalrymple chart Turtle Island and Sunkan Island. Sketches of which I have taken. Coasting along Java I saw a Reef off Two Tree Point the particulars of which I mark’d to avoid it in my observations.

Log of HMS Albemarle, Capt Nelson.
Mayplon (?) Beacon. The Lands End of Shippy (sic) Sheppey?. Dist off shore 6 or 7 miles.
Moderate breezes and hazy.
At ½ past 7 C.KJa (?) tenders boat came aboard and acquainted us that a number of East Indiamen was coming up and that they would not admit the landers (?) boats onboard to impress their men in consequence of which we bro’ too and have a great strain on the best bower. At 10 broke the Missengar rec’d a purchase and broke it finding our efforts to purchase the anchor afore/at no (?) effect and 4 sail of Indiamen move abreast and some above us was obliged to cutt leaving behind the best bower anchor with the buoy, buoy rope and 20 fathoms of cable. At 11 got within hail of the Haswell (sic) and ordered her to come to an anchor but she having all her men on board would neither admit the boats to board her or bring too until we compelled her by firing 26 nine pounders and one 10 pounder shotted at her. We likewise bro’ too 3 others and anchored alongside the headmost in 5 fathoms water. At 5 am weighed and run alongside Haswell, the people having refused to be imprest and threatened resistance but finding the Albemarle yard arm to yard arm with them they submitted and the tenders went alongside to take them aboard. At ½ past 9 fired one nine pounder and made the signal for Argos and Enterprize to weigh. At 10 spoke the Enterprize and ordered Capt Payne to weigh immediately and follow me. At noon calm. Driving down wity the tide and stowing the anchor. The Argos in company.
